About the Jazz Festival

The jazz that has been playing here every two years since the 1980s has long earned the name of the Lithuanian Jazz Mecca for this resort. After all, jazz "pilgrims" are attracted here from all over Lithuania, and not only from it. In a town with only 2.9 thousand inhabitants, almost as many people listen to jazz once in 2 years - 3 thousand jazz listeners! Thus, the radio and TV recordings of this festival are probably the most comprehensive document in the history of Lithuanian jazz. In the long run, the Jazz Forum in Birštonas gave an impetus to Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda residents to organize similar events in their cities.

The largest part of the festival program consists of Lithuanian jazz musicians, so the Birštonas Jazz Festival mirrors the face of Lithuanian jazz - musicians debuting on the jazz scene and already gaining international recognition, for whom the Birštonas stage once became a springboard to major international jazz scenes, play here.

Birštonas Jazz Festival stands out with its Grand Prix, a kind of Lithuanian Jazz Oscar, awarded for the most important contribution to Lithuanian jazz.

A distinctive feature of the event is the organizers' attitude - "the stage is for art", so you will not read the names of the sponsors here (other spaces are dedicated to it), and the scenography on stage is a unique work of art. Since the first festival, his attributes have been created by the artist R. Kepežinskas, who has been creatively exploiting the theme of musical instruments year after year in the sign of the festival. The Birštonas Festival has an international resonance - it is known in Europe, it brings together organizers of other festivals, producers, managers, jazz critics and journalists from other countries.
