Zoe (played by Lily James) is a simple London girl, a documentary filmmaker, who lives with her eccentric mother (played by Emma Thompson) and is looking for love. True, she's not doing well on the latter front - the guys she finds on online dating apps keep turning up... Not for her, to put it mildly.
Zoya's childhood friend Kazim (actor Shazad Latif), who lives in the neighboring house, does not pay attention to all the romantic nonsense, because according to the customs of his nation, his parents will choose the bride for him. One day, after hearing that Kazim is finally engaged, Zoya has a great idea to make a documentary about different romantic traditions. After persuading Kazim and his family to agree to this adventure, Zoja begins to record the entire marriage process of her friend.
