A sports weekend took place in Birštonas: the winners of three championships were announced

2025/06/08 Birštonas

On June 6-8, during the Birštonas resort festival "Birštonuokimės", the resort became the center of the hottest sports events. The second stage of the Lithuanian Beach Soccer Championship, the first stage of the Lithuanian Aquacross Jet Ski Championship, and the Lithuanian Student Athletics Championship were held here, during which the leaders of these competitions were revealed.

On Saturday and Sunday, the first stage of the open, 21st Lithuanian Aquacross Water Motorcycle Championship took place on the Nemunas section near Birštonas, where motorcycles of different classes and power with more than 50 participants started. The international competition attracted guests from Poland, Latvia and Estonia, and the unique racing conditions in the Nemunas current made this stage particularly intriguing and difficult for all participants.

"Unlike regular competitions in standing water, the Birštonas stage took place in the flowing Nemunas River, where participants had to overcome not only speed challenges, but also fight against the natural current and unexpectedly rising waves. Each turn required special concentration and technique," said Tomas Gurkšnys, President of the Lithuanian Jet Ski Sports Federation.

In the most powerful "Runabout GP1" class, the Polish representative Andrzej Wisniewski triumphed, leaving no chance for the Lithuanians. In the "Runabout GP2" class, Domantas Vaznys won, who had won the first round of the European Championship just a week ago. In the "Runabout GP4" class, Dovydas Kutra was unstoppable in all competitive swims, and in the women's class, multiple Lithuanian champion Astra Gurkšnytė triumphed.

The Lithuanian Beach Soccer Championship has been held in Birštonas for the third year in a row. The previous two years saw the I stage, and this year – the II stage. Usually, this championship consists of three stages, held in different cities of Lithuania. Nine teams from Kaunas, Kaišiadorys, Kupiškis, Joniškis, Marijampolė, Mažeikiai, Panevėžys and Prienai participated in it over the weekend. After fierce competitions in the sand, the results of the second stage were distributed as follows:

Group A:
"OG Kaišiadorys" - "Joniškio SC-Saned" 9:2
"Naryanta" - "Marijampole" 7:2
"Naryanta" - "OG Kaisiadorys" 4:2

Group B:
"Dembava" - "Olimpo SC" 4:3
"7bet-Nemunas" - "Panevezys" 4:3
"Olimpo SC" - "Kaunas Zalgiris" 0:5
"Dembava" - "7bet-Nemunas" 4:5
"Kaunas Zalgiris" - "Panevezys" 8:3

After this stage, it became clear that Narjanta and 7bet-Nemunas, as well as OG Kaišiadorys and Kauno Žalgiris, would meet in the championship semi-finals.

After all three stages, once the winning team is determined, the Lithuanian beach soccer champions will gain the right to represent Lithuania in the European Beach Soccer Winners Cup, where the strongest European beach soccer teams compete.

The Lithuanian Student Athletics Championship was also held in Birštonas all weekend. Due to the developed infrastructure, it is not the first time that it has been organized in the resort. This year, more than 100 participants from the country's higher education institutions and universities competed in the championship. The competition was held at the Birštonas Stadium, and students competed in as many as 25 events, including running, high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin throw and other events.

The championship also welcomed Olympic athletes – Edgaras Benkunskas, Austra Skujutė and Diana Zagainova, who raised the overall level of the competition with their experience and results.

The two-day championship saw the most outstanding performance and the overall team standings were led by the Lithuanian Sports University, followed by Kaunas University of Technology in second place and Vilnius University in third place. The event organizers were pleased that Birštonas is not the first time that the student athletics championship is being held and hope that this event will become a tradition in the resort and will further increase the prestige of the country's academic sports.

In addition to the main championships, the resort festival also featured a number of other sports competitions and events, from tennis and petanque tournaments to youth extreme sports performances. Parkour athletes, BMX athletes and scooter riders demonstrated their skills, while special competitions and family relays were held for young athletes.
