The passenger shipping season officially started in Birštonas this weekend. From now on, regular one- and two-hour sailing will take place here throughout the summer in the Nemunas Loops Regional Park with the largest ship ever sailing here, Algirdas.

A week later, the regular route Birštonas-Prienai-Birštonas is scheduled to start, and at the end of May, Kaunas – Birštonas – Kaunas. In a year, there are plans to reach Alytus and maybe even Druskininkai.

"We are striving to revive passenger shipping on rivers, and we have been doing so for many years. This requires infrastructure, which we are gradually building on our own. I have no doubt that the owners of smaller ships will reach our example and we will soon travel around Lithuania not only by car or train, ”said Mindaugas Žiedelis, President of the Nemunas Passenger Ship Association and founder of MB Birštonas Cruise. M. Žiedelis was one of the first to revive regular passenger shipping in Lithuania and started voyages on such routes as Kaunas – Birštonas – Kaunas and Kaunas – Šilutė – Kaunas (the longest water routes in Lithuania). Last year, M. Žiedelis and his team opened the first wharf of large passenger ships in Birštonas, to which Algirdas, which has 150 passenger seats, was successfully moored. By the way, although it was opened at the end of the season, the new pier in Birštonas was a huge success among the owners of its own ships. The 24 m long, 8 m wide (200 sq. M) pontoon pier in Birštonas can accommodate 100 people. In winter, she was resting in the old pier of Kaunas Lagoon, and a week ago she was brought to Birštonas by ship Algirdas. The trip on the Nemunas from Kaunas took as long as 10 hours.

The news of this season is regular sightseeing trips on the ship Algirdas in Birštonas. This is the largest ship ever to work in a royal resort, ”says M. Žiedelis. Since 2014 Algirdas transports passengers on the route Kaunas – Birštonas – Kaunas. Thanks to him, the resort has already been visited by 35 thousand. tourists. Undoubtedly, this popular route remains. And having a marina for large passenger ships provides an opportunity to offer additional water entertainment in Birštonas. "We plan to transport about 30 thousand people to Birštonas this season alone. people, ”says M. Žiedelis. - We also hope that the marina will become a small port, where those traveling on the Nemunas will not only be able to moor, but also refresh themselves in the cafe located here. We will use the infrastructure completely free of charge. "

Pleasure boating will be available next to the marina. Designed for those who love speed and extreme sports. And from June, in cooperation with the triathlon club Team Ignite, there will be wellness training at the marina and its accesses: yoga, cycling, running, BFT, etc. Passenger shipping enthusiast M. Žiedelis has more plans: further development of passenger routes and marinas in the Nemunas to Prienai, and later to Alytus or even Druskininkai. "I hope that we will have more and more centers of attraction in the renewed and rapidly developing shipping on the Nemunas," says M. Žiedelis.
