2022/10/25 Culture

On the darkest and creepiest weekend of the year, from October 28 to November 2, Birštona will host the largest gathering of ghosts - Šmēklinė.

Cultural events, special offers of hotels and spa centers await the visitors of the resort, pumpkin dishes will color the restaurant menu, and the biggest challenge of the weekend will be the "Mountain of Horror", which only the bravest can overcome.

According to Rūta Kapačinskaitė, director of the Birštonas tourism information center, the Birštonas resort remains attractive all year round, so it has something to offer visitors even in the cold season. "We notice a trend that families come to spend time in Biršton during the autumn school holidays. And although there is no shortage of bookings for accommodation establishments this weekend, there are still places available, and there will be plenty of entertainment next weekend," says R. Kapačinskaitė.

Blinding darkness and the occasional appearance of supernatural beings. Small graveyards and creepy laughter. Will you dare to overcome the longest toboggan run in complete darkness and surrounded by the ghosts of the night? The famous "Fun Hill" in Biršton becomes the "Horror Mountain" for the Ghost Weekend. The most extreme toboggan track in Lithuania, the length of which is about 600 meters, and the turning ring is even 10 meters high, will be plunged into complete darkness, therefore, when ghosts suddenly appear, going down tobogganing will be much scarier, and the adrenaline in the body will be more.

The resort will also host cultural events organized by the Birštonas Cultural Center. October 28 The piano mystery "The Story of the Merchant of Venice" by pianist Gintaras Jaunuševičius will be played in the Kurhaus, which will briefly take you to the legendary city of Venice. The listeners will recognize the carnival characters Piero and Harlequin, the treacherous Casanova, and will enjoy the sound inspired by Murano stained glass, silk and the smell of orange blossoms. On the same evening, the Amphitheater will host "Midnight", a communal feast with dishes and lanterns made of pumpkins.

The beginning of November is also inseparable from the tradition of visiting the graves of the dead. The Birštonas cemetery in the city center hides the old stories of the residents of the resort - famous people are buried here. The old Birštonas cemetery was also immortalized in the films "9 Circles of the Fall" (1984) and "Redwood Paradise" (1981) by the Lithuanian film director Bronius Talačka.

After descending from the "Mountain of Horrors" or after a walk in the cemetery, it will be possible to relax in the resort's pools, saunas or beauty treatments. The day spa "Grožio sodas" of sanatorium "Versmė" has prepared a special moisturizing hand treatment "Cocoon", and the hotel "EGO SPA" has created ghostly beauty procedures "Ghost face" and paraffin treatment for hands "Ghost paws".

What kind of Ghosts without pumpkins? Birštonas cafes and restaurants have special menus and entertainment dedicated to this orange vegetable. For example, the chef of Esse gastrobar invites you to taste dishes from the chilling but palate-pleasing Dia de los Muertos menu. Resort burger bar "Bir. bur. Bar" on October 29 a traditional karaoke evening, special Halloween cocktails, games and surprises await.
