While commuting daily to New York, recently divorced Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) dreams of the house she shared with her ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux). A woman notices the new resident of the house, Megan (played by Haley Bennett), a woman of extraordinary beauty who embodies everything she feels she has lost. On the trip, she notices an argument between Megan and her husband Scott (Luke Evans). Rachel gets off the train but passes out, likely due to her drinking problem. After her revenge, she is covered in blood and covered in bruises. She can't find Megan anywhere and gets involved in a suburban life full of danger, intrigue and mystery.
