Documentary Session Jazz Ambassadors
"Jazz Ambassadors" in Birštonas begin US film diplomacy tour of Lithuania
November 26 6 pm The first screening of the American Film Showcase film diplomacy program will take place in Birštonas Kurhaus, where guests will see a documentary by American director Hugo Berkeley entitled "Jazz Ambassadors".
Jazz Ambassadors is a story about music, diplomacy, and the fight against racial inequality, centered around prominent American jazz artists Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Dave Brubeck. In the 1960s, these musical geniuses were hired by the US government to confront critics of the then Soviet Union about America's racial inequality while touring the world, but eventually faced a serious moral challenge, realizing that equality was still a dream come true.
With this event, the US Embassy in Lithuania is launching a nearly a year long documentary film tour on human rights and civil society, which will give residents of ten small towns a chance to learn about the current American perspective on entrepreneurship, youth, science, culture and human rights. Film screenings are made under the auspices of the US State Department-sponsored American Film Showcase.
After the screening, viewers and guests are invited to participate in a film discussion with representatives of the US Embassy in Lithuania, Birštonas Municipality, and non-governmental organizations.
