The mineral water’s significance is represented in the coat of arms of the resort: a fantastic golden fish with silver teeth spurting a silver spout of water against a navy blue background. Before Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant was built in 1959, a small statue of a whale with mineral water flowing out of its mouth marked the location of the Vytautas Spring. When the water level of the Nemunas River rose, the symbol of the resort was submerged. The legendary whale was revived in the resort’s coat of arms (author Arvydas Každailis). The fantastic fish spurting water is reminiscent of the whale and represents the past and future of the resort. The Birštonas coat of arms was approved by the President of the Republic of Lithuania on August 21, 1995.
